I think it is hard for me to decide one thing that I really am going to take home from this week. I think the biggest thing was seeing how little I am actually putting into this class. It sounds bad, and it is, but I really haven't put in the effort that I need to to get out of this class what I need to. I am only retaining about 60% of what we are studying and that needs to be much higher. For me, it was eye opening to realize that I need to change how I am approaching this class.
The main thing I took away from class this week is how tricky classroom management can be. I have learned lots of great strategies in my classes but actually putting them to practice as a teacher is a lot harder than it seems when you are learning the strategies. Also each student is different and there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to managing a disruptive student. As a teacher I need to figure out what is causing the student to misbehave and then see what I can do to get that student to be on task. It might take a few (or a lot of) different tries to figure out what will work for a particular student.
It really does take a lot of trial and error, and it will be so different for each child. Children are all so different and unique so none of them learn the same way. This is a hard task, but it's definitely worth it and extremely beneficial for each child as it will effect all of them individually.
Mine is similar to Tara, in that I am not learning as much as I need to be. That "quiz" was so eye opening to me! I realized that this is a class where I need to be putting in a lot of effort in order for me to learn what I need to. I feel like I am learning each day in class, but I need to be doing my part to learn from the reading materials because I have not been able to understand a lot of what I read. I also need to do my part by going home after each lesson and review what we learned. I enjoy what I learn in this class, but I want to do my part so that I can learn as much as possible.
Mine goes right along with Tara and Linzie's comments. I really was, I guess humbled, by the quiz we had and the hard truth that I'm really not doing all I can to learn in this class. I agree with Linzie, I need to be doing my part and a huge thing that will help is reading over and reviewing my notes after each class. This will help with retention of the things we learn in class. I also haven't been understanding a lot of what I'm reading outside of class. The book is so boring, but I need to change my mindset and understand that this is my education and I need to be taking it seriously. After college, I won't have a source like this again unless I decide to go to graduate school. I really need to buckle down and be more serious about this class. At first, I didn't really know what the objective of this class was. It is kind of odd that CD majors have to take this course because of it's content, but it's still good content and these are still good things to learn. I really do think it is all in our mindset.
