The reading for this week also talked about how the general education teacher is often the one who begins the referral process for an IEP. A teacher who does this should come prepared with examples and data that supports their suggestion for a referral and can give the pre-referral team what they need to make a determination. Teachers will also need to collaborate with parents, the Special Education department, and any others involved in the IEP process.

Regular Education Teacher's Role in Development and Implementation of and IEP
Tara - I think that a regular education teacher has a very important role in the success of an IEP. Firstly, the teacher will know best what is happening in her classroom and therefore be able to say what can be implemented in his or her classroom. At the same time, this teacher can also make sure that what is agreed upon and outlined in the IEP gets done. This means that a teacher from a regular education classroom can advocate for her classroom and the other students in the classroom while still making sure that the child who has a disability is able to receive the care and services they need and deserve.

Kylie - So as we learned in class thanks to Tara :), a regular education teacher has the role of promoting an IEP for the child being evaluated. He or she has been with and observed this child in her own classroom and is normally the first one who notices any developmental delays in the child in the school atmosphere. He or she has been there first hand trying to work with the child and may notice that the child falls behind the other children in a few subjects consistently, or the child may be slowing things down for the other children because the regular education teacher has to spend more time with him or her. So the regular education teacher's job is to tell the rest of the team all about what she has been noticing and give great detail on this to promote the implementation of the IEP.
ReplyDeleteLinzie - The role of the regular education teacher is crucial in the implementation of an IEP because they are typically the ones who will be referring the child for an IEP.
ReplyDeleteThey are usually the first ones who notice if the child needs special education services and so during the meeting to decide if an IEP is necessary, the regular education teacher has to be prepared to explain why she feels special education is necessary for the student. As we learned in our mock IEP, the regular education teacher is the one who is strongly advocating for an services because he or she is the one who will typically feel the strongest about the need for one. It is clear that the role of the regular education teacher is extremely strong in the implementation process of an IEP.
April - I agree with what has been previously stated. The regular education teacher plays a major role in both the development and implementation of an IEP. The regular teacher is usually the first to notice if the child needs special education services and starts the process of getting an IEP. They also are an advocate for the child. Then while the IEP is being implemented they play the role of making sure the student is getting the services they need in their classroom.
